Hello dolls! :D I'm SUPER excited to introduce to you this ah-mazing SHOP by Janelle Haskin! She crochets the coolest headbands, scarves, neckwarmers, barrettes, and wristlets! Truly unique, and SO perfect with Fall approaching!
1.) Tell us a little about the "Janelle Haskin's" etsy shop?
I started selling hand knit neckwarmers, scarves, and bow headbands in a wool/acrylic blend in January 2010. Since then, I have branched out and began crocheting more natural leaves, feathers and bow headbands(that Zooey Deschanel donned on July 4, Yay!) in 100% cotton for summer. I am so excited about my Autumn 2010 line which includes extra wide turban headbands dazzling with pyramid studs, gorgeous two-tone neckwarmers with girly scallop edges, and new and improved winter bow headbands with vintage buttons on the back to make them adjustable to fit any head size. I am also really loving my victorian-esque scalloped edge wristlets made out of 100% wool. For the first time in my life, I can say I absolutely love what I do, and I hope my small business continues to grow. Eventually I want to expand to design clothes, but for right now, this is keeping me deliriously happy.
2.) Have you always been a "headband" kinda girl?
Oh! I have always been THE headband kinda girl... along with the dress kinda girl... the hat kinda girl... the boot kinda girl... ;)
3.) How long have you been crocheting?
I blame everything on my grandmother. She was the most loveliest of ladies who taught me how to knit and crochet many, many years ago. Sadly, I never even liked it that much since the only thing I could make were a ridiculous amount of crooked scarves that took forever to complete. One year I decided to make my boss a scarf for Christmas and it took me two years to finish... wooops... Luckily, she is a very forgiving character and was just as pleased to receive it last year!
Honestly though, my passion for knitting and crocheting came as quite the surprise. Last fall I found myself lusting over anything knitted and super chunky. After many months of drooling over other artist's work, I decided that I would give it a try again and see what happens. I watched a few youtube tutorials to brush up on my skills which was extremely helpful, and I made my first neckwarmer which I gave to my fiance's sister for Christmas. This time around, the craft came so easy to me and I found myself traveling around to various yarn stores searching for the perfect yarn and getting so inspired by the gorgeous colors. I made a handful of neckwarmers for my friends and family and then decided to give etsy a try. I started blogging and received so much positive feedback that I have yet to put down my needles. It has turned into such a positive creative outlet for me that I now know I would be lost without it.
4.) What type of guy or girl do you envision wearing your pieces?
I like to dream that any type of gal or guy would enjoy wearing one of my designs! I am especially proud of my new pieces for autumn and really do believe there is something in it for everyone.
5.) What inspires your pieces?
I am very inspired by color. When I find that perfect skein of yarn in the prettiest shade of purple, I usually know exactly what I want to make it into. I am also very inspired by nature, music(right now it's Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zero's and Regina Spektor) fall fashion and soft, fuzzy animals.
6.) Can you offer us any tips on accessorizing with your headbands or scarves?
Different ways of wearing your hair with the headbands? What to pair your scarves with, etc.? [any tip or tips would do! :)]
I think it all comes down to confidence. Sometimes I get customers that say they love my pieces but don't feel they could pull it off. I think the key is, if you are wearing a large bow, tone it down and only wear one necklace... Many of my scarves and neckwarmers are so extravagant they speak for themselves. You don't have to go crazy, just throw it on and out you go. Keep it simple!
7.) What's your own personal style like?
My personal style varies day by day depending on my mood. Sometimes theres nothing more I want to wear than skinny jeans and a T-shirt... Other days I feel super girly and wear little dresses covered in flowers, or high waisted skirts with my favorite pair of boots. I love fall fashion more than anything and can not wait to wear capes and layers and patterned tights, OH MY!
